egg custard

Sonia started me off by telling me she was going to make an egg custard. Well I was going to make mango and peach tarts so I decided to do both!

must have a sit down1

Graham has struggled manfully for about three days with the most stupidly designed greenhouse in the world. The language has been vile in parts but generally he has been more restrained then I would have been1

lovely weather

What a glorious day and it was yesterday as well. we shall get used to it and then it will go rainy again.
Yesterday we went to Skegness to be trained to be beach watchers. It was very good and lunch was provided although I wasn't able to actually go on the beach because of my pot but Graham had a good time with the rather vivacious young teacher! I on the other hand sat outside the hotel in the sun and read the Daily Mirror (the only free paper available). afterwards we were able to visit a supermarket and do a bit of shopping. I never thought I would see the day when shopping in a supermarket would seem like a treat!
Whilst we were out yesterday, Grahams new greenhouse was delivered. It wasn't supposed to come until Monday so it was quite a surprise. However Graham putting it together has afforded me more entertainment then one person can reasonably be expected to cope with. He is only stopping for hurried meals and the occasional toilet break. We are well into day two and it does seem to be taking shape ok though.
Have managed to speak to all my sisters in the last few days. Everybody seems ok except for poor old Sonia who has had responsibility thrust upon her. I think things will calm down after the funeral and there will be long periods of waiting. Waiting for the court to issue deeds etc. anyway I hope she will take it all in her stride as she usually does.
My white chicken is still playing up . She is broody and refuses to come out of the nest box. She gets very angry when you try to move her. I have chucked her out about a dozen times today but she goes straight back in and screeches like a banshee.
A delivery man who lives locally and keeps a lot of hens has just had all his cockerels and some of his hens taken by a fox. I guess it's just a question of not if but when?

Nightclubbing

Last night when Graham went to lock the chickens in, he found that there was one missing. We scoured the surrounding fields and called . Only a pheasant came and he flew up a tree to roost. by this time it was dark so we figured that the fox had been and taken our chicken .There's nothing to be done except to lock away the remaining hens and forget about it. Unfortunately thats easier said then done and neither of us slept very well. I had visions of the fox coming back now that he knows where there are chickens!
Anyway when Graham went to let the girls out this morning he found the hen we call Tina waiting to get in!! Despite the fact that it had been raining all night she was as dry as a bone and very hungry! where has she been all night and why didn't we find her?
Gina says she's been out clubbing! I might buy that if this wasn't Mablethorpe !
I am enjoying my new computer immensely and in particular the Skype. I have talked to numerous people and had a good laugh. We have also been experimenting with watching T.V on and it's fantastic. We have had Chuck Berry in full colour and sound. Wow!
more later.

Idleness

Due to my broken foot I have spent long hours just sitting. I have been able to catch up with some reading and some of the books might be of interest to my nephew in the U.S.
1) THE HUNGRY CYCLIST by Tom Kevill Davies. ( Harper Collins £7.99)
He spent two years cycling from New York City to Rio de Janeiro on a gastronomic quest to find the perfect meal.

(2) TRICK OR TREATMENT? By Simon Singh and Edward Ernst ( Corgi £ 8.99)

This is a clearly written, scrupulously scientific examination of the health claims of key areas of alternative medicine: acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic therapy and herbal medicine. The results are stark. In no case, apart from in some limited ways in herbal medicine, do any of these "therapies" work. On the contrary, they can be life-threatening. this is an important book!

I have also read some drivel as well. some of the detective stories are so far fetched as to be laughable but still I can't bear not to finish a book once I have started it.
Gina has just phoned from Edinborough. They have gone for a few days< I suspect to get away from Poppy!
not much else happening.

New Pot

went and got a new pot on yesterday as the other wasn't tight enough and it was hindering my getting around. It's much better now.Yesterday I was suffering greatly from cabin fever and was stir crazy so at around 3 .30 we went to our friends in the village and sat in the sun in their garden. By 4.pm I was tipsy and by the time we came home I don't remember whether Graham ran me in the wheelchair or not. He does like a good wheelchair push!
Last night he saw a rat near the hen hut so has never slept all night, thinking of ways to get rid of it. I have told him that he will never get rid of all the rats, even if he spent all his waking hours poisoning them. However he has put several trays of poison down this morming and is going to buy a trap when we go to town.
